30 may 2010

i kept thinking it was saturday all day today.

got up at 5:30 to give the cat her shot. watched a movie called The Hiding Place about thee Ten Boom family in WWII. must confess to napping off and on during the movie. very bleak.

breakfast

toast
oj
iced tea
coffee

lunch

turkey and swiss sandwich
iced tea

mopped the downstairs floors. elbow was sore when i finished.

went to Walmart to fill my prescriptions. we also bought a few necessary items. a lot of stuff was on sail today. Walmart was not very busy.

very hungry on the way home. stopped at McDonald's for a snack.

snack

chipotle wrap
large fries (half)
iced tea

dinner

broc. & cheese quiche
salad
iced tea

quiche was cooked in the toaster oven using the convection setting. came out very well. we used to have quiche about once a month. haven't had it since the oven broke down. really glad we can now make it again in the convection oven. salad was also remarkably good.

we watched a third episode of To Serve Them All My Days. decided that it is likable but not gripping. won't be watching the rest of the series.

29 may 2010

woke up at about the usual time. E had trouble with the shot yesterday so i thought i'd go down and see if i could help. but E had already given Karma the shot. i'll get up early tomorrow and do the shot.

breakfast

bagel w/ cream cheese
banana
oj
iced tea
coffee

watched about an hour of Black Hawk Down. tremendously bloody movie. don't know how people get through combat. the two Delta soldiers who go down to guard the 2nd helicopter strike me as alternately unspeakably admirable and almost equally foolish. rationally you think that they do no good and yet it costs them their lives. on the other hand, the no man left behind principal is so intrinsic to the ethic of these men that you finally have to recognize their action as true heroism. really excellent cast in this movie.

snack

cookies (3)
coffee

we decided that this would be a good day to get our hair cut. E wanted to go to Bubbles at Gainesville and i was going to go to the Hair Cuttery there. when we got to the Wegmans mall we realized that there was a Bubbles there that would probably be less crowded. we sent in there. E got an appointment at Bubbles and i decided to go the American Barber Shop (or whatever) near Staples. while we were waiting for E's appt we browsed through the printer, netbooks, and notebooks. fun. amazing how much less computers cost. really nice monitors are less than $200. if i had 2k i'd buy two new computers, two new monitors and a wifi printer.

lunch

turkey flat bread sandwich
two donuts
iced tea

at Dunkin' Donuts. good but not very filling.

e's appt was delayed a bit so i went to Wegmans and got a paper and a soda. it was nice and quite and cool there.

dinner

blt
egg sandwich
bowl of soup
iced tea

we watched an episode of To Serve Them All My Days. Still on the fence on this show.

dreamed i was falling out of bed overnight and woke up to the realization that i was falling out of bed! got cramps in both calves at that time. very painful. sat up at about 3:30 stretching my legs to work the cramps out. ouch.

slept off and on until 5:30. went down at 5:30 or so.

breakfast

bagel w/ butter
banana
coffee
oj
iced tea

drove E to the VRE. parking lot was not very crowded.

since E was getting off early her train would be back at about 2:30. decided to work until about 1:30.

E and i went to lunch at Olive Garden. waiter was kind of different!

lunch

salad
bread sticks (3)
angel hair pasta and shrimp
sorbet w/ fresh fruit
iced tea

pretty good. i was very hungry. ate breakfast at 6:15 and lunch at 3:00.

very humid, very close in the afternoon. both E and i were strangely tired when we got home.

LA Story (Steve Martin) was on TV so we watched that. took a nap after LA Story. it's hard to describe LA Story as a good movie. it is very idiosyncratic. i think the most accurate description is probably pleasant. it is a very pleasant movie. not a bad thing. i wish there were more pleasant movies.

huge t-storm at about 9

26 may 2010

woke up just before the alarm today. actually pretty good timing.

slept with the fan in the window the last few days. it got way too cold each night. on Monday i just pulled on a blanket. last night i took the fan out of the window when it got really cold and that seemed to moderate the temp nicely. you tend to have so few days when you can sleep with the fan in the window that i like to do it when i can.

in the core of the summer it's simply too hot. in the spring and much of the fall it just tends to get too cold overnight. we were getting into the 30s overnight in early May.

when we lived on Ft. Eustis we didn't have AC. we used to have all of the doors open and fans in every room. i remember i slept in the lower bunk and Mark slept in the top bunk. i remember the sound of the fans and the moonlight coming through the windows. a very summery feeling.

breakfast

bagel w/ butter
banana
oj
coffee
iced tea

really good this morning. must have been just what i wanted.

watched the 2nd half of FF. i had seen the movie before and really didn't like it but i wanted to see the first movie after seeing the Silver Surfer movie. the first FF movie isn't really so much a bad movie as a badly constructed movie. it tries to tell two origin stories in parallel (the FF, Dr. Doom)and doesn't manage to do a good job in either case. oddly enought the movie may be more true to the sensibility of the comic book than many of the other Marvel movies. anyway i gave the movie something like a D the first time i saw it. on watching it with more patience I give it about a C. can't really fault any of the performances. all of the main characters are solid.

cut the grass before lunch. thank goodness. if i had waited it would have been way too hot.

lunch

salami and cheese sandwich
pickles (2 spears)
banana
coke

huge headache after cutting grass. aspirin is not helping.

dinner

chicken salad sub (ft. long)
iced tea

from Subway. not bad chicken salad but like in many places, way too sweet!

Foyle's War: Eagle Day. B.

Honeysuckle Weeks!
