30 April 2010

30 apr 2010

can't believe it is almost May.

up early for concall. also had to make sure Karma had her shot by 5:30 so the reading they get at the vet today will be accurate.

Elizabeth drove to VRE today.

breakfast

bagel w/ butter
banana
oj
coffee
iced tea

i watched the 2nd half of Rumor Has It during breakfast. pretty good. somewhere between a b- and a b.

lunch

bacon cheese burger
fries
iced tea
small frostee

i used to like Wendy's fries. these weren't so very good.

dinner

soup
bagel w/ cream cheese
iced tea

dessert

yogurt
banana

we watched another Lovejoy episode today. also watched part of the ancestry show about Spike Lee.

29 April 2010

29 apr 2010

breakfast

bagel w/ butter
banana
oj
coffee
iced tea

watched a really bad episode of star trek this am. the entity. seemed to have all of the worst features of a star trek episode. real snoozer.

lunch

fajita burrito
chips and salsa
iced tea

from Baja Bistro in Bristow

wondering about all the Bistros in Bristow. BB is probably most like Baja Fresh though the burrito i had was very similar to the ones you get at Chipotle.

snack

mocha
apple fritter

from Caribou Coffee.

i just noticed that the mall where the Target is on Nokesville Road has a Manassas address but the VRE station down the street has a Bristow address. seems very odd.

dinner

turkey reuben sandwich
grilled swiss sandwich
potato chips
iced tea

dessert

yogurt

we watched another episode of Lovejoy from season 5. Lovejoy and Charlotte finally go to bed. started to watch Rumor Has It with Jennifer Anniston and Kevin Costner. ok so far. have to finish it on another day.

i was watching the bio of Cher just before bed. they had some video of an appearance by Sonny and Cher together on Letterman in 1987. surprisingly moving to see the two of them together again even if the video was over 20 yrs old. that segment was followed by Cher's eulogy at Sonny's funeral. sniffle, sniffle. i liked Cher way back when and then for a long time i didn't like her. then she played herself in Stuck on You and showed that she had a sense of humor about her cherness. liked her much better after that.

28 apr 2010

up early for a concall. could not connect. rescheduled for Friday.

lots of errands in the am. no breakfast until after 8:00.

breakfast

bacon, egg & cheese bagel
sausage burrito
iced tea

at Mickey D's in Bristow.

coffee

caffe mocha

at Caribou Coffee. really good.

there's an older gent who walks in the are of the Caribou Coffee every time in that area. i'd say he's middle eastern, maybe Lebanese. i get a kick out of him because he wears on Aston Villa warm up (probably official) and carries an umbrella. he gets a cuppa when his walk is done. might have to follow his lead.

in India i met lots of Man U supporters. one of my tuk tuk drivers in Laos was a big Arsenal fan. i've met Chelsea fans and Tottenham fans and so on. never met an Aston Villa fan before.

lunch

bagel w/ butter
iced tea
yogurt

snack

pretzels
iced tea

i watched part of A Yank at Oxford in the afternoon. i had to go to meet the train at the bonfire scene. i'll have to rent this one if it's on Netflix.

dinner

salad
ravioli w/ tomato sauce

sauce was a little too sweet.

we watched another Lovejoy episode. season 5. in the Lovejoy books, Tinker is supposed to be such a wastrel that he smells terrible and is rather difficult to be around. in the TV show Tinker is rather a pleasant older gent who drinks a bit too much.

i started to watch the RSO's version of Hamlet on Great Performances. i found it pretty interesting but couldn't watch after a certain point. Hamlet was played by David Tennant who also played Barty Crouch, Jr. in Harry Potter in the Goblet of Fire. i found that very distracting.

28 April 2010

27 apr 2010

doctor's appointment at 9:00. fasting. oh boy.

normally i try to sleep as late as possible when i have a fasting app't at the doctor. less likely to be tempted to eat something. today i woke up at 4:30. tried to go back to sleep but gave up and got up at 5:00.

last time i went to ffx city at rush hour it took 45 minutes. i gave myself an extra 30 min. left at 7:45. i got to main street in ffx at 8:52. traffic was terrible.

the doctor got hung up somehow so i didn't see him until almost 10:00. bp is still ok. i need to call in a week to check on blood tests.

starving by the time i left the doctor!

breakfast

cowboy omelette
iced tea
chips and salsa

at Anita's in Fairfax City. my friendly waitress was there again today. it's funny when i used to work down the street from Anita's and eat there about once every two weeks she used to look at me like i was something bad she found in the drain. now we're best friends. go figure.

snack

caramel macchiatto

at Starbucks in FFX City. lots of new stuff in ffx, like the library and the Starbucks, that was not there when i lived there.

i had decided to consolidate a visit to the VW dealer with my doctor's appt. but i almost forgot. i actually drove past the dealer and had to go through my old office's parking lot to double back to the dealership. an unnamed repair shop lost my wheel lock so i had to go to the dealer for a new one. i thought this would be a half our process but no such luck. since my car is now 6 yrs old the wheel lock is no longer available. nearest dealer that had it was in College Park and i would have had to go there to get the part. ended up having a new lock kit installed. the kind that comes on new passats. headlight was burned out as well. i ended up spending 2.5 hours at Borders and the dealership. day is blown!

lunch

shrimp salad sandwich
orangina

at The Deli in FFX City. haven't been to The Deli in ages. used to be a staple for Elizabeth and I. kind of snooty to call yourself The Deli but it is actually a pretty low key place with very good subs. their Italian sub (called The Deli) is excellent. i usually get a Deli at The Deli.

shrimp salad was quite good. there used to be a really nice deli next to Sweeney Todd's in Arlington (used to be near the Courthouse but that area has changed hugely!) that made a shrimp salad sandwich like the one at the Deli.

dinner

The Deli sub
pretzels
iced tea

very good but a little too much hot pepper.

tried to watch Stardust (Michelle Pfeiffer, Clare Danes). fell asleep.

27 April 2010

26 apr 2010

woke up at 4:30. karma was apparently waiting for me to wake up. she drove me downstairs within 20 minutes. crazy.

watched some interviews w/ the pythons.

breakfast

bagel
banana
oj
coffee
iced tea

at about 5:30.

drove E. to the VRE. foggy again.

bacon, egg & cheese on sourdough
iced tea

from Arby's at 9:00

lunch

corned beef, pastrami, and cheese sandwich
iced tea

snack

toast
club soda

dinner

mac & cheese
peas
iced tea

dessert

yogurt
iced tea

we watched Antiques Roadshow (from Phoenix) and a Christmas episode of The Big Bang Theory.

25 April 2010

25 apr 2010

didn't wake up until 7:30 this morning. stiff back but my stomach feels normal.

breakfast

bagel
banana
oj
coffee
iced tea

snack

yogurt
ginger ale

had to go find ketodiastix so we can check the cat's blood sugar. returned the ketostix to Walmart. couldn't find the right thing there. went to Walgreen's. couldn't find it there either so i realized they must stock it behind the counter. sure enough you have to ask for them. funny, though, they are only about $15. there are lots of things in the regular stock of the store that cost more.

lunch

steak and cheese sub
iced tea

at Jerry's. sub was really good.

snack

cappuccino
apple fritter

at Starbucks. worst cappu i've had in yrs.

watched the first half of the ACC Women's Lacrosse Tournament. Maryland vs. UNC. Maryland won 10 to 5. they really dominated the first half. it was hard to believe UNC was the higher seed. the women's game is very different than the men's. the women's rules include a free shot for penalties rather than a man-down situation and the face off is more like a jump ball. i'd say the women's game is more like basketball and the men's more like ice hockey in the penalty features and the kind of held ball situation.

the women also wear these cool goggles instead of helmets. there seem to be penalties for almost any contact. not as interesting as field hockey but kind of cool to watch. i wish they would attack the goal more.

i didn't get back from the drug store until the 4th quarter of the men's final. wasn't really a close game. UVA won 10 to 6 over Maryland. UVa's goalie is really very good. Ghitelman. I think this is his fourth year.

Elizabeth went to Tudor Place today. she said it is a really amazing house. it's essentially across the street from Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown.

dinner

scrambled eggs
fried bologna
toast
coffee
iced tea

excellent. really wanted simple food today.

we watched the 1995 version of Persuasion (Amanda Root, Ciarin Hinds) after dinner. an old favorite. "you must retrench." so delicious when Captain Wentworth announces his engagement to Anne Eliot and the machinations of Elizabeth Eliot, Mr. Eliot ("our cousin"), and Mrs. Clay are brought to ruin.

(just learned that Corin Redgrave, who played Sir Walter Eliot, died this month. April 6, 2010, aged 71. son of Michael Redgrave. brother of Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave, uncle of Natasha Richardson. may he rest in peace.)

24 April 2010

24 apr 2010

slept until 6:30 today.

breakfast

oatmeal
oj
banana
coffee
iced tea

watched an episode of big bang theory at breakfast.

lunch

pizza (2 slices)
iced tea

at Tony's in Bristow.

felt terribly ill about 90 minutes after lunch. almost the same as yesterday. something is not agreeing with my gut. ran to the bathroom three times in a two hour period and then felt better except amazingly tired. what my mom calls "wrung out." had a short nap.

dinner

cooked chicken
plain rice
iced tea

tried to keep it very simple. seemed to tolerate this food pretty well.

we watched the last episode of Cranford on DVD tonight. What a great series! Amazing cast, great costumes, excellent locations. Laugh out loud funny scenes followed by scenes of terrible sorrow. very highly recommended.

23 April 2010

23 apr 2010

woke up at 4:30 again today. quite awake.

snack

yogurt
iced tea

at 5:00 am. I watched 2 episodes of big bang theory in the am.

fed Karma and gave her her shot around 6:00. it was easier today than yesterday.

breakfast

bagel w/ butter
oj
banana
coffee
iced tea

used the new toaster oven. it toasted pretty well. not nearly as simple as a toaster, though.

watched an episode of ST: TOS during breakfast. trying to finish season 3 so I can give it back to Scott on Mother's Day. why are Kirk and Spock (and Bones) always part of the away team. you would think policy would prevent both the commanding officer and the 2nd in command to be on away teams together.

lunch

pastrami, corned beef, and swiss sandwich
crackers
iced tea

snack

handful of m&ms

stopped work at about 3. feeling v ill. stretched out on the couch and watched big bang theory. drank a club soda. felt somewhat better.

dinner

rotiserie chicken
potato salad
steamed broc.
iced tea

chicken and salad from Harris Teeter. both tasty.

we watched an episode of Cranford after dinner. part 4 of 5. yet another good episode.

22 apr 2010

earth day. 40th instance, i think.

woke up at 4 this morning. don't know why. couldn't seem to go back to sleep. i watched an episode of Star Trek.

early breakfast

bowl of cereal w/ milk
banana
iced tea

finally sleepy after Star Trek. 30 min nap.

late breakfast

coffee
bagel
oj
iced tea

drove Elizabeth to VRE. v foggy!

the mowing guys arrived at the house just as i was going to Walmart to get Karma's meds. they had a large zero-turn radius mower (really big, golf couse size) and smaller mower (still bigger than our lawn tractor).

had to wait most of an hour for the prescription to be filled. the insulin cost over $100 because cat meds aren't covered by our prescription plan, of course. I just didn't realize how much money the prescription plan was saving us. ouch! it looks like the prescription will last about 6 wks so it works out to $75 per month. ouch but not as bad an ouch.

lunch

swiss and mushroom omelette
sausage (2)
hash browns
toast
iced tea

at Frost Diner. felt so depressed after seeing the cost of the prescription that i really wanted comfort food. always like breakfast at the Frost when I can get it.

someone is working on the Ocean Cafe. it has been painted and it looks like some of the windows have been replaced. the lady at the Frost said she heard it was going to be a Mexican restaurant if they can get all of the permits.

the yard looked great when i got home. wish we could afford to have it done professionally all of the time. the guy told me it took less than an hour for two guys to cut the grass. it usually takes me between 2.5 and 3.

picked up Elizabeth at the VRE at 6:19. felt really ill. E drove home.

better after a tiny nap and some sinus meds.

dinner

chili dogs (2)
beans
coke
iced tea

really felt like a coke with the chili dogs.

Lovejoy after dinner. we are about mid-way through season 5. Lady Jane has been gone since the end of season 4. Eric just quit to go work at his uncle's pub. i like some of the new characters but i miss Lady Jane Felsham.

went to bed very early. asleep by 10:00. woke up at 1:00 and felt like i'd been in bed for hours. read for 20 minutes and back to bed.

21 April 2010

21 apr 2001

rainy this morning. kind of nice. we really needed rain.

breakfast

bagel w/ butter
oj
banana
coffee
iced tea

drove E to the VRE because of the rain.

snack

caramel high rise
apple fritter

at Caribou

lunch

pastrami, corned beef and swiss sub (1)
chips
yogurt

arranged for someone to cut the grass this week. hope to have our lawn tractor back in time for the next mowing.

went to the vet to learn how to give Karma her insulin shots. the shots now seem like the easy part.

picked up E at the VRE at 6:20.

dinner

veg. lasagna (amy's)
salad
iced tea

actually very good. i was a little surprised.

we watched part of a show about helper dogs. then an episode of Lovejoy with a side trip to Wales. watched part of Steve Martin's bio before bed.

20 apr 2010

still maintaining the cold overnight pleasant during the day pattern. really quite nice weather.

up early for an early am presentation. went well but i was hungry for breakfast the whole time.

breakfast

egg sandwich
banana
coffee
iced tea

our toaster is no longer working. i guess it is at least 6 yrs old. we're debating about whether to get a toaster or a toaster oven. you don't realize how often you use the toaster until it is not available.

lunch

steak sandwich
salad
cole slaw

at Glory Days in Gainesville. watched a little of the Barcelona/Intermilan match during lunch. i really don't understand how the UEFA Cup works.

dinner

pastrami, corned beef, and Swiss sandwich
pickle spears
tater chips
iced tea

dessert

donut
iced tea

we watched another Lovejoy after dinner. some old favorites from British tv were in this episode. Selina Cadell, the housekeeper in A Pocketful of Rye, and Peter Benson, Perkins in Have His Carcass among other things. it's always a kick when you recognize someone and it gradually dawns on you where you've seen the person.

19 April 2010

19 apr 2010

15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing. Sad, sad day.

actually cold again this morning.

breakfast

bagel w/ butter
coffee
iced tea
yogurt

drove Elizabeth to the VRE. she probably would have made it on time but the volume of traffic on monday is so variable that we didn't want to risk it.

lunch

salami and swiss sandwich (2)
pickles
yogurt
iced tea

snack

cinnamon toast
iced tea

dinner

mini burgers (2)
fries
salad
iced tea
italian cream cake (half)
coffee

at Ruby Tuesday. everything was good except for the coffee.

watched an episode of Lovejoy and Big Bang Theory after dinner.

18 April 2010

18 apr 2010

woke up at 4:30 this morning. suddenly wide awake. i read a few pages of Seymour: An Introduction. decided to get something to eat.

in the high 30s when i woke up. v cold after what we've gotten used to.

early breakfast (5:00 am)

bagel w/ butter
banana
oj (tiny bit)
iced tea

i watched two episodes of Andy Griffith from the 5th season. an earnest t. bass episode and an episode about bea and andy inviting kin to stay for a week. sort of run of the mill episodes.

watched War with Jet Li and Jason Statham in bits and pieces over the morning. i was disappointed. really wanted to see a brawl between Li and Statham. they had a showdown at the end but it wasn't a great moment in martial arts film making. i saw another movie a few years ago that had a similar plot. can't remember the name. i guess War reminded me of The Replacement Killers but TRK was a much better movie.

late breakfast

oatmeal
coffee

lunch

chicken fajita burrito
soda

at Chipotle. I saw an incredibly beautiful woman at Chipotle. When she left all of the men watched her go but I also noticed that about half of the women were watching.

snack

caramel macchiato
apple fritter

at Starbucks

dinner

shepherd's pie
steamed broc and carrots
iced tea

quite good. Elizabeth bought the shepherd's pie and a store in Leesburg. as far as i could tell it was not peppered with actual shepherd.

dessert

bowl of cereal w/ milk

we watched Jurassic Park after dinner. i couldn't remember the last time i saw that movie. i love the scene where the two kids get back to the center and find the food laid out for them.

17 April 2010

17 apr 2010

colder today but still very pleasant. the weather has been really spectacular lately. no humidity. tons of sun. comfortable temperature. breezes. few bugs.

this morning the chill and the dampness of the air reminded me of the play ground at Hilton Elementary. It was always a little breezy, cool, and damp there because it was so close to the James.

breakfast

bagel w/ butter
yogurt
banana
oj
coffee
iced tea

we watched the news about the volcano (and rvs and so on) on Today this morning. then we watched part of Shakespeare in Love.

we didn't really feel like doing chores around the house today and we hadn't been to the mall in a long time so we decided to go to fair oaks.

lunch

chicken club sandwich
fries
iced tea

at McDonalds on the way to the mall.

i haven't been getting nearly enough exercise so we decided we'd walk the mall. we'd make a circuit of the 1st floor. take a break for a drink. then make a circuit of the 2nd floor.

we used to go to fair oaks all the time. it is really surprising to see all of the stores that have closed. very surprised to see that the Unos has closed. People's Pottery and Christian Bernard are also gone. the Apple store was overflowing. it was kind of funny. it used to be that you couldn't get near the iPhones. now you can play with an iPhone with no problem but you can't get near the iPad.

i found a hooded sweatshirt at the foot locker for 99 cents. i had to buy it. couldn't pass it up.

snack

cafe mocha
lemon pound cake (half)

at the Corner Bakery. pound cake was very good. mocha was ok.

dinner

grilled cheese (2)
tomato soup
iced tea
chips

dessert

banana

16 April 2010

16 apr 2010

nice weather again today. threat of thunderstorms in the evening and the temp is supposed to drop by 20 degrees or so between friday and saturday but today has been beautiful.

breakfast

cereal w/ milk
banana
oj
coffee
iced tea

elizabeth was on track to catch the vre today so she drove over by herself. usually the parking lot is bulging on monday and relatively empty on friday. the difference between a full lot and an empty lot is about 5-7 minutes so whether you catch the train can depend on where you park.

they actually improved piper lane around the vre station recently to allow for a bit more parking. it helps. now if they could just improve the shoulders on the service road and put in lighting ...

i watched the end of kingdom of heaven during breakfast. the 2nd half is a significantly better movie. well structured. beautifully filmed. fine acting. amazing customs and battle scenes. the seige engines themselves are among the coolest i've ever seen in a movie. the second half on its own is an A or A-. The overall movie probably a solid B because it is a bit of chore to get through the first half. i can only guess that the director's cut is way better than the cut that was released in theaters.

snack

salt & vinegar chips
iced tea

lunch

salami and cheese sandwich (2)
pickle spears (2)
iced tea

found out that karma, often called sugar cat, is, in fact, a sugar cat. she has diabetes. have to go to the vet next week and learn how to give insulin shots. perhaps the most fun i can conceive of. (ok, of which I can conceive. so how badly proper word order can suck.)

the whole insulin thing had me kind of freaked out so i decided to just take a drive. ended up going to the grocery store to get a few things we need. then i went to the dunkin' donuts that just opened near wegmans.

snack

jelly donut
cappucino

donut was good. coffee was so so. i had a good cappu at the same store the week it opened. what can you do.

when we first moved to fauquier i was astonied* that there were no donut shops or bagel shops. no DD, no Einstein, no KK, no Manhattan, nothin. you could get fresh donuts and fresh bagels at grocery stores but you couldn't get a hot, toasted bagel w/ a schmear and a cuppa. astonied i was. this DD is the first one between manassas and warrenton. still no true bagel shop.

most of my made up english is only partly made up, by the way.

dinner

veg burgers (2)
chips
iced tea

boca burgers. i've actually come to like them. go figure.

we were watching ground hog day on the weather channel because we couldn't find anything else. i always like that movie but they were running a crawl about severe storm warnings that got a bit too annoying. going to be early.

* astonied. past participle of ME astonien. to amaze. to astonish.

15 apr 2010

tax day. for once we've already got our refund. last few years i've been writing a check and running to the mail box today.

really beautiful day again. supposed to get called on the weekend.

drove elizabeth vre.

breakfast

bagel w/ butter
banana
oj
coffee
iced tea

i watched the first half of Kingdom of Heaven (Ridley Scott, 2005) during breakfast and during lunch. the first half is a pretty good movie. not great. there's a huge battle just before the intermission that is problematic for me. i really couldn't tell who was fighting who. it was remarkable that they were able to stage such a "brawl ridiculous" but from my point of view it didn't advance the story at all. i thought Orlando Bloom gave a good account of himself. not Academy Award material but solid. Jeremy Irons and Liam Neeson were both very good.

this was the director's cut. i don't know the movie did so poorly. maybe they should have released the director's cut. so far I'd give Kingdom of Heaven something between a B- and a B.

lunch

bologna, salami, and swiss sandwiches
pickle spears
chips
iced tea

listening to the radio hearing about the huge disruption of air traffic caused by a volcano in Iceland. remarkable. i think they've cancelled all international flights into and out of England.

i've been catching episodes The Bernie Mac Show at lunch time on some days. idiosyncratic show. some very funny stuff. "That's the only way he escaped the all-seeing eye." it is really hard to believe that Bernie Mac passed away. he was just over 50.

snack

yogurt

dinner

clam chowder
salad
iced tea

we found Romancing the Stone on cable last night. watched the second half. "Joan Wilder? Juanita Wilder?" the corrupt colonel in the movie could have come out of 40's central casting. generally a lot of fun, though. awful 80s style sound track.

15 April 2010

14 apr 2010

breakfast

cereal w/ milk
oj
bananas
coffee
iced tea

i watched a couple of episodes of flight of the conchords during breakfast. wonderful silliness. murray and mel really get to me. v. funny.

took the cat to the vet around noon. costs a fortune every time. they did some blood tests this time. we should get the results on friday or monday.

lunch

bacon bleu roast beef
fries
iced tea

at arby's. pretty good.

snack

mocha
cinnamon donut

from caribou coffee. i did the sudoku from the post at the coffee shop. nice break.

dinner

eggs
fried bologna
croissant
oj
coffee
iced tea

i watched the last two episodes of fotc on the disk from netflix. jemaine foolishly dates an australian girl. "Have you got your wallet?' couldn't fall asleep. stayed on the computer until almost 1:00 am.

14 April 2010

13 apr 2010

thomas jefferson's birthday.

madge john's birthday.

overcast today and rather cold first thing in the morning. concall at 7 am. very good.

breakfast

bagel w/ butter
banana
oj
coffee
iced tea

very fresh bagel. quite good.

star trek this morning: aliens assume the crew of the enterprise is prone to violence. test them out by placing them at the ok corral as the clantons. interesting story idea.

lunch

spaghetti and tomato sauce
yogurt
iced tea

liberte mediteranean yogurt - very good!

i went to the recycling center and got a hair cut this afternoon.

snack

fries
iced tea

at wendy's. i've been thinking about fries for a few days. c-f-a doesn't have regular flat fries.

elizabeth and i were both feeling a little indifferent to food in the evening. one of those times when none of the meals you've planned for sounds appealing.

dinner

bagel w/ butter
pickle spears (2)
yogurt
iced tea

another good bagel. greek yogurt this time. a little chalky.

snack

cereal with milk
club soda

it was very chilly in the house last night. made me sleepy. fell asleep watching a show about Henry the VIIIth on National Geographic channel (I think!). i dreamed i was on an int'l flight when i was sleeping in front of the tv. maybe it was because i was wearing my air france socks.

12 April 2010

12 apr 2010

FDR died on this date in 1945. I've seen newsreel footage of people weeping in the streets as the funeral train goes by. He died in Warm Springs, GA and was buried on the family estate at Hyde Park, NY. I can't begin to conceive of how a person could cope with the decisions FDR had to make. He doesn't seem to get nearly as much consideration as is warranted.

breakfast

cereal
banana
coffee
iced tea

star trek with breakfast. interesting episode with Diana Muldaur as an empath. she would later play Dr. Pulaski in ST:TNG. i looked her up on Wikipedia. she graduated from Sweet Briar College in 1960. who'd a thunk it? Jon Stuart's from W&M. Tina Fey's a wahoo.

still hungry after vre

2nd breakfast

ham, egg, and cheese sourdough
iced tea

from Arby's.

waited in the morning for the guy to come from Cecil's. didn't know whether he'd need help getting the lawn tractor out of the shed. i was told he was on the way at 11:00.

lunch

salami, cheese sandwich (2)
yogurt
banana
iced tea

kept looking out for the lawn mower guy. finally decided to leave it to fate and take care of the groceries.

as i came out of the shower i saw the truck pull up. got dressed and found some shoes and heard the mower start up. next thing i know he's driving it onto the flatbed. i couldn't get the thing to move. i guess the drive belt slipped off and he put it right. i guess it helps to know what you are doing. i have a dread of reaching under a lawn mower. even if it is off. it's like putting your hand down a disposer. can't do it.

anyway, it's nice to know the transmission isn't shot.

dinner

chicken sandwich
fries
iced tea

from Chik-fil-a. pretty good.

snack

donut
caffe mocha

donut from Wegmans, right good as they say in Carolina. caffe mocha from Caribou Coffee in Bristow. (Is it Bristow?) Also markedly good.

The Caribou Coffee in Bristow is my favorite coffee spot in this area. If I could I would have my office there.

I watched big bang theory on tv. poor leonard.

penny looks like she's been going to a trainer.

wil wheaton. never liked the guy. i may like him less than sheldon does.

11 apr 2010

sunday! really beautiful day.

we were thinking about going to new market or luray today but decided to do some chores around the house instead. my rt leg is killing me since yesterday. i was carrying a big box of cat litter upstairs when i encountered one of the cats coming downstairs. my foot slipped off the step and my let twisted in an odd way. hurts from the tip of my toe to the middle of my back.

breakfast

bagel (2 mini w/ butter)
oj
banana
coffee
ice tea

lunch

salami & swiss sandwich (2)
iced tea

snack

crackers
iced tea

dinner

turkey w/ gravy
stuffing
cranberry sauce
corn
iced tea

we watched the last two episodes of season 10 of Frasier.

11 April 2010

10 apr 2010

saturday! i've been thinking it was saturday almost every day this week.

star trek: tos has become my breakfast companion. in the episode i watched today kirk and spock went to a romulan ship to get a specimen of their cloaking device. kirk removes the device with a wrench and maybe a screw driver. scottie installs it amazingly quickly. first time they turn it on it doesn't work. next try, bingo! talk about plug and play. surprising that the enterprises OS had the correct drivers for a cloaking device. Joanne Linville was probably the best thing the episode playing the romulan commander. There is something voluptuous about her. Her scenes with Spock worked really well.

breakfast

mini bagels (2)
oj

i think today is the 6th anniversary of the day we moved into this house. when we lived in FFX City we used to go to Po' Folks for dinner on the anniversary of the day we moved into that house because we had lunch at Po' Folks after settling on the house. when Po' Folks closed we shifted to Black Eyed Pea. when they closed we had sort of gotten out of the habit.

i remember very clearly waiting on the front step for the moving van to arrive. the weather was very similar to today except today is suddenly cold (50) and i remember it being fairly warm, maybe 65 back in 2004.

i started to watch Charlie Wilson's War during breakfast. i meant to watch the 1st half hour and ended up getting hooked. really liked the movie.

7 apr 2010

slept pretty well last night. it was warm enough that we had the windows open all night. in april!!!!

i dared to step on the scale this morning. my eating habits have gotten so bad that i've been afraid to check my weight. anyway, it wasn't as bad as i thought it might be.

breakfast

bagel w/ butter

coffee
iced tea

meeting in dc this afternoon but i have to take care of a few things in the am.

snack on the way downtown

cheeseburger
iced tea

at mcdonald's

i did pilates 3-5 times a week for almost three years. stopped along time ago. having done pilates, though, makes me acutely aware of how weak my core muscles have become. you don't realize how much you use your core when you balance on a metro car. jeez. gonna have to go back to good old ana caban.

v. good meeting in dc.

snack

thai wrap
iced tea

at au bon pain

took forever to get back to ballston on the metro. orange trains were coming through so full that you couldn't get on.

starving by breakfast time

bagel (2 mini, with butter)

watched the highlights on ESPN.UCONN and Stanford play tonight in the women's final. Should be a good game. If UCONN wins as expected they will have two consecutive undefeated seasons. unheard of! truly an amazing accomplishment.

lunch

tuna melt
sweet potato chips
iced tea

at wegmans. sweet potato chips were surprisingly bland. they now have gold peak unsweetened tea at wegmans. gold peak is my favorite bottled tea. to me it tastes the most like brewed tea. i used to get the lemon tea at shoppers but i'd much rather drink unsweetened.

snack

bowl of kashi go lean crunch w/ milk
iced tea

dinner

grilled ham and swiss
tomato soup
iced tea

we watched chapter 2 of cranford today. v sad episode. so many of the actors look familiar but i can't place them all. i would not have recognized greg wise if elizabeth had not pointed him out.

stanford was dominating uconn in the first half. wow! surprised that the women's final is on espn and not cbs. just checked at 10:00. uconn now leads by 11 in v low scoring game.

easter sunday!

i haven't really recognized easter in years. but i'm glad to see the weather is nice so that people can enjoy the day and have a good easter egg hunt. i used to love easter when i was a kid. new clothes, tons of candy, good food. i don't think i even minded going to church.

this is my 400th post on this blog.

i've been watching the season 1 episodes of a bit of fry and laurie during breakfast. there is some funny stuff but there is an overwhelming sense of formula to the series at that point. i seem to remember that the show gets funnier.

breakfast

bagel w/ butter
egg & a cheese sandwich
coffee
iced tea

decided to work on chores today. tons to do.

lunch

turkey and swiss sandwiches (2)
iced tea

snack

potato chips
coke

we watched the first chapter of Cranford on DVD. i've tried to watch this movie several times and always lose the thread. enjoyed it better on DVD when we could pause it and turn on the captions. the captions seem to make it a lot easier to catch the names of the characters.

snack

caramel macchiatto

at starbucks in warrenton

dinner

ravioli
salad
iced tea

pretty good

snack

potato chips
iced tea

i watched the second half of butler / msu. pleased that butler won even though i really like izzo and msu. nice to see someone in the final for the first time.

we watched the 2nd half of "in the shadow of the moon". great archival footage. really interesting interviews with a number of apollo astronauts. i wonder why neil armstrong doesn't do interviews.

i watched the second half of duke / wvu. such a shame to see butler go out with that injury. he was in serious pain on the floor. v touching when huggins was kneeling down on the floor trying to comfort him. i think wvu would have beaten duke in mid. feb. duke has just been getting consistently better in the last few weeks.

i have to pick duke in the final although it would be a blast to see butler win the tourney.
