25 apr 2010

didn't wake up until 7:30 this morning. stiff back but my stomach feels normal.

breakfast

bagel
banana
oj
coffee
iced tea

snack

yogurt
ginger ale

had to go find ketodiastix so we can check the cat's blood sugar. returned the ketostix to Walmart. couldn't find the right thing there. went to Walgreen's. couldn't find it there either so i realized they must stock it behind the counter. sure enough you have to ask for them. funny, though, they are only about $15. there are lots of things in the regular stock of the store that cost more.

lunch

steak and cheese sub
iced tea

at Jerry's. sub was really good.

snack

cappuccino
apple fritter

at Starbucks. worst cappu i've had in yrs.

watched the first half of the ACC Women's Lacrosse Tournament. Maryland vs. UNC. Maryland won 10 to 5. they really dominated the first half. it was hard to believe UNC was the higher seed. the women's game is very different than the men's. the women's rules include a free shot for penalties rather than a man-down situation and the face off is more like a jump ball. i'd say the women's game is more like basketball and the men's more like ice hockey in the penalty features and the kind of held ball situation.

the women also wear these cool goggles instead of helmets. there seem to be penalties for almost any contact. not as interesting as field hockey but kind of cool to watch. i wish they would attack the goal more.

i didn't get back from the drug store until the 4th quarter of the men's final. wasn't really a close game. UVA won 10 to 6 over Maryland. UVa's goalie is really very good. Ghitelman. I think this is his fourth year.

Elizabeth went to Tudor Place today. she said it is a really amazing house. it's essentially across the street from Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown.

dinner

scrambled eggs
fried bologna
toast
coffee
iced tea

excellent. really wanted simple food today.

we watched the 1995 version of Persuasion (Amanda Root, Ciarin Hinds) after dinner. an old favorite. "you must retrench." so delicious when Captain Wentworth announces his engagement to Anne Eliot and the machinations of Elizabeth Eliot, Mr. Eliot ("our cousin"), and Mrs. Clay are brought to ruin.

(just learned that Corin Redgrave, who played Sir Walter Eliot, died this month. April 6, 2010, aged 71. son of Michael Redgrave. brother of Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave, uncle of Natasha Richardson. may he rest in peace.)
