i woke up at 6:00 this morning. it was really cold! dropped into the 50's overnight. read a chapter of fever pitch. finally decided to get up.

i had a brake warning light on my car so i took it to the shop today. new place in chantilly. definitely less expensive than the dealer but it took forever! definitely seems to be running better after the repair.

at the epic grill in chantilly. quite good food and relatively inexpensive. excellent fries but TONS of fries. i didn't plan to eat them all but i ended up nibbling while i finished the sudoku and ate all the fries.

met a gent assigned to the old guard. really nice guy. turned out he was a staff sergeant and was about to retire with 23 years of service. he was about 6-10 years younger than me but looked much younger.

finally got home at 6:30.

elizabeth was ready to go to the vre in good time. we got there with a few  minutes to spare. it was a good thing. traffic on 66 was a nightmare. it took me almost 50 minutes to get from the vre station to planet fitness. unbelievable backups.

we decided to washington, va today. considered going yesterday but decided to work on the yard instead. it takes about 45 min. to get there.

nice quite little town in rappahanock county. most places were not open on sunday. we did see the courthouse and the inn at little washington. a number of b&b's in the downtown. very pretty town but almost nowhere to eat.

we were told that there were a few restaurants in  sperryville. really wanted something simple like a mcd's or a subway. didn't see anything of the like. we ended up at the thornton river grille.

we watched in which we serve from netflix this evening. don't know how it got on the list. noel coward movie made during wwii as a tribute to the british navy. kind of an odd movie by modern standards. very stagey in parts but some very good scenes. exceedingly british!

this is what i remember from sunday. did not take notes at the time.

mommy called at a little before 7:00. scared the crap out of me. she did not remember what day it was. thought she had lost saturday. it turned out she actually remembered saturday and probably lost sunday

karen went to the hospital early so she could get on the road to charlotte earlier.

glenn woke up at about 9:00. we went to hardee's on the way to the hospital.

we got to the hospital around 11:00. doors were closed. we saw burt coming out. she let us know it was ok to come in. karen had left around 9:30.

scott and mary arrived a little after we did. mary had brought a lot of snacks for everyone and sandwiches for mommy. very nice of her.

scott and mary bought a blue ray for mommy because the dvd player was non-functional.

on saturday they said they would release mommy on sunday. on sunday the re-evaluated and decided to keep her until monday.

mommy got very sleepy around 12:30.

we decided to leave and let her sleep. glenn is staying until at least monday, possibly as late as friday. karen is returning on friday as previously planned. burt can stay with mommy if she is released and glenn can't stay around.

scott and mary went home.

glenn went to take care of a few things and said he would go back to the hospital later.

i headed home.

did not take notes on saturday. this is what i remember on monday.

i was thinking at would walk at mariner's museum while karen went for a run. slept too late. karen was gone when i got up.

claire went to the hospital early so she could get on the road as early as possible.

woke up glenn at 9:30. glenn and i went to hardee's for breakfast

we met karen and claire and burt at the hospital. nurses were saying that they would do a new colonoscopy on saturday. claire decided to stay until the procedure was finished.

hospital allows pretty wide open visiting on sat./sun. very good staff at hospital!

got a candy bar at around 3:00. subway, cafeteria were closed at that time.

we took shifts in mommy's room so it wouldn't be too crowded.

no lunch

finally begin steps to actually do the procedure at around 4:30. we decided to go to dinner and come back at 6:30.

arranged with scott and mary to meet us at the restaurant.

food was good. rings were excellent. atmosphere of restaurant was not so nice. quaker steak and lube. reminded me of curly's garage in charlottesville many years ago but curly's was nicer.

we all went back to the hospital at 6:30. procedure was complete.

mommy was very much better. she had been worried about the procedure the whole time. with the procedure complete she was much more relaxed.

doctor did not see any place to cauterize or mend. he said there is an area of the colon with a fairly large number of discolorations and possible bleed sites but none actively bleeding. mommy was able to watch the colonoscopy on video was satisfied with his appraisal. karen talked to the doctor after and also was satisfied.

upshot: she seems stable now. if she has the same problem again she needs to get to the hospital as fast as possible. at that time they will probably have to remove a section of her colon. most of her colon is in excellent shape.

mommy was very sleepy afterwards. we left around 8:00.

scott and mary went to the hotel.

claire left for home. she got home very quickly. she had a long day but the drive home was probably less crowded because of the lateness.

karen went to mommy's house. glenn and i went to food lion and then to the house.

bought gold leaf tea and lemon cookies. good tea. good cookies.

karen went to bed early. glenn and i watched inception. i went to bed about 11:00. used the bipap this time.

karen, claire, glenn, burt were there. mommy looked very weak and tired but better than i expected.

we went to dinner after visiting hours and decided to let mommy sleep.

i got a call from karen just before lunch. burt was at the hospital to take mommy home. all was going well until mommy had to go to the bathroom. she had an effusion of blood again. apparently quite a large volume. she has been readmitted. she says she feels pretty well. doctors are running tests to find the root of the problem.

learned that mommy was admitted to mary immaculate last night. we hope it is nothing serious. she is having tests and a colonoscopy today. we think the procedure will be in the afternoon.

set the alarm today for the first time in about a week. got up at 6:15 so i would be ready to take elizabeth to the vre.

i saw that the temp. was expected to hit 90 by 9:00 am so i went around and closed the windows just before it was time to leave for the train.

we left in good time. got caught up behind some slow moving trucks. we made it with about a minute to spare but apparently the ticket validator was out of order.

went to the gym for the first time in about a week. didn't really feel like going but felt better when i got there.

i watched good luck, chuck on dvd this evening. not bad. a little too  heavy on the fart jokes. jessica alba is very cute. i think ryan reynolds would have worked better than dane cook but d.c. was better than i expected him to be. the extended sex montage was gratuitous in the nth degree. still, i'd give it a b-. sort of like a male version of 13 going on 30 in a way.

watched part of snl as well. scarlett johanson looked wonderful. she was pretty funny too. they spoofed a show that was itself a spoof. seems to be a hobby on the show. saw part of a show called repo something. if you can answer 3 of 5 trivia questions they pay off your car loan rather than repossessing your car. dreadful idea. the stooge on the show tonight called "george w. bush" the greatest president of the u.s. and then had to guess that hydrogen was the h in h2o. he thought he lost when the announcer said his fourth answer was "correct". i guess  if you're hazy on the word "correct", it's perfectly reasonable to use "george w. bush" and "great" in the same sentence.

got my hair cut after the dentist. cut way too short but i guess it will grow back.

car took a long time to finish. they say it also needs rear brakes (over $600), new tires (don't ask), a leaky seal fixed in the engine (about $600) and will soon need timing chain ($1500). will need to find a bus service out this way.
