Elizabeth looked like she was on time at 6:45 but wasn't actually ready to go until 7:20. the parking situation is so bad at broad run station that she really needs to be on the way by about 7:15 to have enough time to park and walk all the way to the station. it really has become crazy. VRE needs a garage at broad run.

we decided to go to Ikea on a whim. hadn't been there in ages. probably would not have gone if we had known it was going to be pouring rain all the way down.

near the very end we missed the turn to Ikea so we stopped at On the Run Mexican resaurant. never tried it before.

lunch

way too many chips and salsa
Mexican chopped salad
chicken soft taco
beef enchilada
spanish rice
refried beans
iced tea

everything was good. salsa was just the right amount of spiciness and chunkiness for me. very good bean.

wandered through Ikea. it's amazing the mixture of attractive stuff and absolute crap. generally the prices seem reasonable. some things seem amazingly cheap (a 99 cent pillow!) and other stuff seems way out of line. i always feel like i'm being stepped on in that store.

dessert

slice of chocolate cake
slice of scandinavian almond cake
coffee

shared with Elizabeth. bad coffee.

at the Scottish place.

McDonald's has the worst mayo in the world.

went to look at TVs at Best Buy, get cat food at PetSmart, and buy a few necessities at Tarzhay.

you look at a 19 in TV to save money. and right next to it is a 26 in TV that is only about $100 to $150 more. then your gaze shifts to the 32 in that is only about $100 more than the 26 in. crazy.

if i had the money i'd get a 42 in, probably LG or Sony. i'd have to do some research to decide between plasma and lcd.

breakfast (9.25)

i woke up at about 4:30 in the ack emma on the floor. i believe i fell i threw myself out of the bed. my rt elbow, knee, hip have been sore all day.

i woke up again at about 5:30 and thought i would just watch a movie and then get up. i watched about 90% of an episode of House ("Not Cancer" from season 5) and fell asleep at some point. woke up in the desk chair at 10:00 ack emma.

(interrupted yet again by the g..d. anti-virus. i am not certain that the prophylaxis for computer viruses is not worse than the g.d. viruses. in any case, virus creators should be treated like Michael Vick. if the could find something else to do with their time we wouldn't have to deal with this picayune shit. i guess it's kind of neat to think that must people who create viruses probably have anti-virus software on their computers.)

breakfast

cereal and milk
banana
oj
iced tea

i had raisin bran crunch today mixed with bran cereal. hadn't tried the crunch version before. very tasty.

i was also certain that today was saturday. wasn't till i woke up at 10 that i realized it was friday.

with regard to House, one of the foundations of the show is that House is an insenstive ass. in the fifth season he is such a god-awful piece of shit that i find the show difficult to watch. and the idea of wacky old House watching TV or playing video games where he shouldn't oughta has been beaten to death. please god let him take an interest in bird watching. i don't know if i can stand another scene where Cuddy confronts House in the room with a comatose patient.

by the way, how does anyone survive the medical bills house generates? the could probably solve the health care crisis by taking away House's medical license. i love it when he tells his minions to "rerun" an $9,400 battery of tests. puh-leeze.

24 September 2009

dinner, thursday (9.24)

ran to Gainesville to deposit checks before 2:00 pm concall

lunch

chicken fried rice
egg roll
iced tea

from China Inn at Somerset Crossing in Gainesville.

on a whim i took a right when i left the mall. Somerset Crossing used to dead end. now it runs all the way down to Old Carolina Road not a very handy alternate route but interesting to know.

the last time i ate at RHB was at least 10 yrs ago. the restaurant at the corner of 123 and Judicial in Fairfax City changed hands about every 2 yrs when we lived there. it finally became a RHB must have been around 2000.after eating at that RHB a few times i stopped going. when i worked at ATLIS we used to go to the RHB in Laurel pretty frequently.

bologna, salami, swiss sub (home made, excellent)
cole slaw (wegman's, a little sweet)
kit kat bars (2)
iced tea
club soda (giant, i'm not so keen on their club soda)

screwed up the easy sudoku. d'oh.

breakfast, tuesday

for some reason i woke up at about 4:00 and couldn't fall asleep.

i got up to check email and thought i might watch a movie on the computer. luckily i checked google and noticed that my conference call was today. i thought that the next two were on wednesdays. funny how the mind works.

if i had not gotten up when i did, i might have slept through the 6am conference.

today is the first day of fall. or autumn

eggs, fried, 2
sausage, patties, 2
roll
oj
coffee
iced tea

i guess this was my greeting to fall.

scott sent me daddy's wia form from the Korean War Project. daddy was originally listed as KIA (killed in action) apparently on 4 Mar. 1951. fog of war and all but it must have been a close thing. if he hadn't survived those wounds none of us would have been born.

he was 14 months short of his 20th birthday on that date.

21 September 2009

dinner on Monday

Tomorrow is the first day of fall. Once again I have let the summer pass me by.

everything bagel, cream cheese
iced tea
pretzels
chocolate pudding

i wrestled with the tv until it let me watch house. season premiere. very good episode. glad i watched. the soundtrack included my favorite radiohead song. no surprises.

house has an affair with jason bourne's wife. he thought he had problems before!

just checked out the video for no surprises on you tube. caramba. that is disconcerting. talk about water boarding.

lunch, monday

pizza (2 slices)
cheer wine, 20 oz
black tea (wegmans)

breakfast, monday

fried egg
fried bologna (2 slices)
oj
coffee
iced tea

the beef bologna I got at Wegman's deli is the best bologna I ever had. I'm guessing it has a first name, a middle name, a last name, and an inherited title. good stuff!

dinner, sunday

quesadillas (cheese, salsa, sour cream) (2)
rice
iced tea

very good quesadillas!

Watched a lot of football yesterday. Can't believe the new cowboys stadium. It is gigantic.

20 September 2009

lunch, sunday

Elizabeth added a can of corn and some sauteed onions to the beef stew to try to moderate the overwhelming wine flavor of the stew.

I added some crushed saltines to mine

lunch

beef stew
saltines
toast
club soda
kit kat bar (1)

the stew tasted better with the amendments. not a total tragedy.

breakfast, sunday

cereal
oj
coffee
iced tea

dinner, friday

for some reason I skipped the old dinner posting from yesterday

That was really a bit of an adventure. I cooked the most complicated thing I've made in a long time. We found a recipe for a slow cooked beef stew on the Wegmans website and I made it on Friday.

The only other thing I've ever cooked on the same scale is my mom's recipe for lasagna but since that makes enough lasagna for 811 people I haven't cooked it in a long time. It is good lasagna, though, even if I make it.

I had to improvise a bit on the stew. I had all of the ingredients but I had too much of some and a little too little of others.

So dinner Friday was

beef stew
crusty bread
iced tea

The stew was ok but for me the red wine overpowered everything else. I don't really like wine so if I made this again I'd make it with half as much vino.

food diary for saturday

breakfast

scrambled eggs
toast
coffee
iced tea

lunch

bacon classic
fries
spicy chicken wrap
iced tea

at Wendy's.

I could not believe how long it took to get served at Wendy's. I've got to remember that I don't really like the bacon they tend to give you at fast food places.

hot dogs
corn on the cob
cole slaw
iced tea
kit kat bar

We were actually going to have the c on the c with the rotis chicken the other day but we forgot! Ha!

c on the c cooked in the microwave must have like a billionth of the carbon footprint of the boiled version. Comes out very well if you microwave it in the husk. I'll have to ask Elizabeth what the setting is.

19 September 2009

weigh in, saturday, sep. 19

I finally faced the music this am and weighed in. Gained by .5 pound. Jeez.

last weigh in, Sep. 8: 325.8 lbs
today: 326.3

Mid term goal: 28 pounds (300) by Dec. 1

18 September 2009

lunch, friday

bagel
nuts
cold fried chicken (medium breast)
crackers
iced tea

the chicken we had for dinner yesterday is not so good cold. ok but much better hot.

breakfast, friday

I forgot to weigh in again today. Bad. It seems that I "forget" to weigh in when I suspect that the trend is not good.

cereal
coffee
iced tea

dinner thursday

I went out to get rotisserie chicken for dinner on Thursday. I really wanted Boston Market but there isn't one close enough.

I went to Starbuck's before going to the grocery store

medium caramel macchiato (grande, grosso)
lemon pound cake

Note: The drink sizes at Starbuck's are short, tall, grande, venti

short = 8 oz
tall = 12 oz
grande = 16 oz
venti = 20 oz

Apparently short is available at most Starbucks but not listed on the menu. Tall makes a lot more sense when there is a short.

Grande means big in Spanish. It means great in Italian. It means great in French. Take your pick.

Venti means 20 in Italian. I guess a zwanzig was not too euphonious.

Dinner

fried chicken (breast, leg)
potato salad
cole slaw
iced tea

The only rotis chicken they had was bourbon flavor. Didn't feel like that. The chicken was huge and quite salty. Generally good flavor but too much salt.

17 September 2009

lunch on thursday

salami & swiss sub
crackers
iced tea

breakfast, thursday

egg, cheese, and bologna sandwich
coffee
iced tea

I bought the bologna at the deli counter this time. So much better than the packaged bologna. Not that much difference in price.

I keep forgetting to weigh-in. Must do so in the morning.

16 September 2009

dinner, wednesday

bologna, salami, swiss sub (2)
beef barley soup
iced tea

I should have stopped at one sandwich!

Saw the I, Borg episode of ST: TNG after dinner. Pretty good episode. The kid playing the borg looked familiar. The season 5 episodes have been pretty good in general.

lunch, wednesday

scrambled eggs
bagel, cream cheese
iced tea

breakfast, wednesday

bowl of cereal
coffee
iced tea

took Elizabeth to the train. We missed it again by about 60 seconds. Went to Manassas to catch the Amtrak.

afternoon snack: 2 snack sized kitkats

I asked Elizabeth to hide the kitkats!

dinner

tuna wrap (2)

watched a good episode of ST:TNG last night. The Next Phase in which Ensign Ro and Lt. Commander LaForge are "cloaked" and appear to be dead to the rest of the crew.

lunch on tuesday

old fashioned sub
macaroni salad
cookie
iced tea

at Wegmans

The master chef was behind the counter at Wegmans today. There's one gentleman, I'd say he's a retired fellow, who works at the sandwich shop. If he makes your sub it is much better than if anyone else makes it. Don't know what the secret is.

I have to remember that the sub at Wegmans is plenty. Don't need a side!

15 September 2009

breakfast, tuesday

cereal
bananas
coffee

dinner, monday

fried egg, pastrami, and swiss sandwich 2
pickles
cranberry sauce
iced tea

14 September 2009

lunch on monday

dessert: snickers ice cream bar

breakfast, monday

food diary for sunday

woke up at 7:00. or so i thought. i decided to watch the last simpsons episode so i could return the disk to netflix. i must have still been sleepy because i feel asleep watching the episode. i woke again at 10:45. i haven't slept that late in a very long time!

breakfast

cereal
coffee
iced tea

lunch

mac & cheese
iced tea

had lunch just a short time after breakfast.

i watched the bulk of the tampa bay/philly game and a large part of the ny giants/redskins game. i can't remember the last time i watched that much football on the opening day. from the time i started watching football until at least a few years after college (say, 1966-1986) i watched at least one complete football game on sunday and i usually watched the monday night game.

in the last 10 or 15 years i've tended to watch highlights and watch play off games. i think i've probably watched more college football. seems there is always work to be done on sunday.

dinner

pizza w/ pepperoni, mushrooms, onions
bread sticks
salad
iced tea
sierra mist

i was really hungry for pizza. i think the last time we had it was when mark and ben came down to virginia.

we went to pizza hut. the pizza was good but their pan pizza does not seem to be as much of a deep dish pizza as it used to be. the bread sticks and salad were surprisingly good. i wish they gave the salad dressing on the side. iced tea was terrible. God knows what they make it from. i switched to sierra mist out of self defense. we went to the hut in warrenton.

12 September 2009

lunch, saturday

bagel, cream cheese
cashews
crackers
pickles
iced tea

felt dizzy and ill at around 3:30. stretched out to fight the dizziness. slept until almost 6:00.

very chilly when i woke up. felt better.

breakfast, saturday

coffee
iced tea

I'm actually starting to like bran cereal. crazy, no?

11 September 2009

dinner, friday

omelette (feta, onions, tomatoes)
grits w/ butter
cantaloupe
iced tea

pretty good. cantaloupe was a little past it's prime. hard to tell any more.

lunch, friday

club sandwich
salad
hash browns
iced tea

at Denny's

got half a tank of gas at Liberty in Warrenton. young guy needed a ride into Warrenton from the gas station. He had just broken up with his girlfriend. Interesting guy. Said he lives all they way out in Rappahannock. (I checked a map. The place he described sounds like it is near Amissville. It's only about 12 miles from Warrenton to Amissville on 211 w. 211 w is a pretty road to drive. Amissville is about .25 of the way to Luray.)

caramel macchiatto
chocolate donut

at Starbuck's

Starbuck's had several of the remastered beatles albums on sale for $12.95. I saw them on Amazon $9.95.

breakfast, friday

today is the 8th anniversary of the september 11 attacks. hard to remember the shock of that day. I remember for weeks afterwards the newspapers were sold out every day.

at chili's

09 September 2009

lunch, wednesday

cheese steak from ledo's
salad w/ house dressing
iced tea

hershey bar

went to the new ledo's in warrenton. service was faster than the ledo's at somerville crossing. the restaurant also has windows on two sides so the lighting is somewhat nicer.

went to walmart to fill prescriptions. very quite at the walmart.

i had to get razor blades. the price of blades is just plain shocking. you just about need a bank loan.

speaking of banks, they are opening a new branch of TFB across from ledo's. The TFB is across the street from a new Chevy Chase branch. Each of these branches is nearly twice as large as bank branches were 20 yrs ago. I passed a new TD bank branch in FFX yesterday that was about the same size. What is the deal with this? Why is there a pharmacy on every corner and why are bank branches getting so big?

breakfast, wednesday

took Elizabeth to VRE. We just missed the train at Broad Run. Took her to Manassas where she has to wait for the number 20.

coffee
iced tea
banana

dinner, tuesday

chicken, carrots, onions, peppers, baby corn, and sweet and sour sauce over rice

lunch, tuesday

very weird lunch today

08 September 2009

weigh in, tuesday, sep. 8

I normally weigh in once a week on Wednesday. I weighed in today because I had a doctor's appointment and I knew they'd weigh me at the office. I could compare my scale to their scale.

last weigh in, Sep. 2: 328 lbs
today: 325.8
at dr.: 329

At the doctor's office I was wearing shoes and clothes, etc. Difference of 3.2 lbs suggests that my home scale is pretty accurate.

Short term goal: 10 pounds (318) by Oct. 1
Mid term goal: 28 pounds (300) by Dec. 1

Current loss is 2.2 lbs. but weigh in was after 6 days rather than 7.
If I maintain the same average I should be at 2.5 lbs. by tomorrow.
2.5 lbs would put me on target for 318 by Oct. 1. 2.2 would put me at 319.2 on Sep. 30.

breakfast, tuesday

fasting this morning for a doctor's appointment

saw the dr. at 9:00. bp ok. did blood and urine tests. call back in about a week for test results.

he recommended that i see the dentist about the sore spot on my tongue.

breakfast at anita's

cowboy burrito (eggs, bacon, sausage, sausage gravy)
bacon
hash browns
iced tea

anita's is my traditional breakfast after going to the doctor. thank goodness i only see the doctor 3 times a year. i can't eat like this regularly.

dinner, monday

Elizabeth's famous home-made potato soup
salad
crusty bread
iced tea

do nut

07 September 2009

lunch

i went to the grocery store today. on the way i realized that i should get gas today since i have an early dr's appointment tomorrow. went to wawa. ran into very bad traffic just before somerset crossing. it took nearly 45 minutes to get to wawa. insane!

roast beef cibatta sandwich (6in)
cole slaw
unsweet iced tea

since it was labor day i thought wegmans wouldn't be very crowded. boy was i wrong. it was packed. i think they had every cash register open when i checked out and i was still fourth in line.

i went to harris teeter to get a few things i can't or won't buy at wegmans (ultra-pasteurized milk, for example). h-t normally has one or two registers open today they had four. while safeway and almost everyone has lowered prices i have the impression that ht has raised prices.

since Elizabeth had the day off we decided to go to borders after groceries. I had

caramel latte (medium)
cookie (warmed)

bought a birthday card and a magazine about the be-at-els

lunch

chicken strips (4 piece) w/ polynesian sauce at Chik-fil-a
waffle cut fries

i checked the nutrition info on this on-line. looks like the three piece would be a better idea. char-grilled chicken sandwich is an even better choice. better have slaw instead of fries next time.

by the way, large shake is 700 calories. 700!

dinner

spaghetti w/ tomato sauce
salad
whole grain bread and butter
iced tea

05 September 2009

dinner, friday

Elizabeth wasn't feeling well so I made something easy for me.

chili (canned) w/ rice (and cheese and onions and sour cream)
corn bread
iced tea

I had way too much rice mixed with the chili. I had about twice as much rice as chili. I think it would have been much better if I'd had as much rice as I had chili.

04 September 2009

lunch, friday

the check i've been waiting for finally arrived. i ran out to deposit and then had lunch at Glory Days Grill.

pittsburgher sandwich*
fries
iced tea

* corned beef, pastrami, swiss, french fries (on the sandwich) and slaw on a roll

sandwich was quite good. i think the waiter was probably a sixth grader. they look younger to me all of the time.

i've been avoiding gdg since they started opening in this area. i don't know why. perhaps their early ads were offensive or ... anyway, i had a good sandwich, the cost was on a par with ruby's or chili's, the service was decent and i watched mike & mike while i ate. what's to complain?

it does seem apparent to me that essentially any meal eaten in a restaurant includes about two times as much food as you would have at home. moral: eat at home most of the time.

breakfast, friday

cereal with whole milk
banana
coffee
iced tea

i'm trying to have either cereal or eggs for breakfast. it's supposed to be better to start with protein and whole grains. we'll see.

dinner, thursday

elizabeth went to visit the cats at petsmart yesterday so we had a fend for yourself day. (is it pet smart or pets mart?)

V8 vegetable blend soup (new flavor, so so)
bagel with cream cheese
banana

chocolate pudding

i do like the garden broccoli variety and tomato herb variety of the v8 soups

03 September 2009

lunch

chicken & swiss on whole wheat
potato salad (not very good)
banana
iced tea

pop tart (worst pop tart i ever heard. some organic brand. yech)

lunch, thursday, sep. 3, 2009

went to recycling on the way to get gas for the mower

snack at 11:00 (i guess pippin would call it elevenses)

iced tea (arizona, sweetened) (drank half, way too sweet!)
reese's fast break bar (one of my favorite candy bars)

breakfast, thursday, september 3

tv came on immediately and worked for 90 minutes so i watched the weather and the news.

while i'm so busy not giving a shit about sarah palin, i find out that i'm now supposed to also be making at least a good faith effort to not give a shit about levi johnston. jeez.

it took me weeks to find out that the "jon" and the "kate" that everybody was talking about as if i should know who they were, were those god-awful non-entities from that piece of shit "reality show".

general rule: if some one is on a reality show please identify them by a full name and a brief description. there are a whole bunch of people who don't watch big brother or refurbish that abode or whatever. i've only recently figured out that that guy that looks like ryan seacrest on that show is really ryan seacrest but there's another guy on another show who looks like ryan seacrest but isn't ryan seacrest. they'll have to introduce a product called i can't believe it's not ryan seacrest.

by the way, why do they still call it mtv

dinner, wednesday, sep. 2

i guess this software is adding HTML or XHTML in the background. i wonder how it deals with the ampersand above. does it escape it as cdata or entify or just not bother about data validity? i'll have to figure out how to view the coded data once upon a time.

breakfast, tuesday, september 2

it's hard to type "september". i keep thinking it is still august.

it really has felt like fall the last few days.

bagel w/ cream cheese (i find i like less and less cream cheese on a bagel)

note: i have coffee with half and half and splenda. i always drink unsweetened tea. lately i've been mixing one earl grey (twinings) with two lipton or two luzianne. very bien, if you know what i mean.

i'm trying to break the bagel habit. i understand that protein and whole grain is the way to go at breakfast. i'm trying to switch over but i really do like that bagel first thing in the ack emma.

The Weigh In

I finally worked up the nerve to step on a scale. The result was not pleasant.

Wednesday, Sep. 2, 2009, 5:30 am: 328 pounds

If my math is right that is 149 kg.

Ouch!

I repeat:

Ouch!

I weighed 270 pounds in July of 2008. That's a gain of 58 pounds.

I feel very comfortable at 210 pounds so for my money I'm 128 pounds to the bad. The charts say I should weigh 178 but those numbers don't work for me. I was in great shape in college and weighed 190.

As Charlie Lau says in Max Dugan Returns: "You have got to be positive and aggressive." So I need to be positive and aggressive.

Short term goal: 10 pounds (318) by Oct. 1
Mid term goal: 28 pounds (300) by Dec. 1

Doesn't seem reasonable to talk about long term goals at this point.

action items:

1. firm up diet, count calories, avoid sugar, fat, and excessive carbs
2. start doing yoga again, try pilates, get in the pool

I lost 50 pounds in the early 90s. I lost 80 pounds between 98 and 2000. I can lose the weight. It's the starting that's TOUGH!

01 September 2009

meals, monday, august 31, 2009

one year ago on this day I was returning from Laos. I actually arrived in the US on the last Sunday in August but the layover and flight from SF to DCA took me from Sunday to Monday. Last year the Monday was the 1st of September and happened to be Labor Day.

No such adventure this year. Of course, I was not in shape for such an adventure this year.
